Investor Retirement Visa

Australia's temporary residence program includes a visa category for individuals wanting to spend some of their retirement years in Australia.

An Investor Retirement Visa is a temporary entry visa to Australia. It does not lead to permanent residency in Australia or to Australian citizenship.

The Investor Retirement Visa provides incentives to encourage people to settle in regional or low growth areas in those States and Territories that offer sponsorship.

The Investor Retirement Visa involves a complex procedure, including a lot of paper submissions with detailed explanations of how any assets involved were acquired. Gateway can guide you through this sometimes difficult process and therefore minimise any stress and confusion.

Eligibility requirements of the Investor Retirement Visa

People applying for the Investor Retirement Visa must:

  • Be 55 years of age or older
  • Have no dependants (other than a spouse). Spouse or partner should also have no dependent children or family members
  • Be married or in a de-facto relationship
  • Be able to support themselves financially in Australia
  • Be of good character and health
  • Have adequate private health insurance over the length of stay in Australia
  • Be sponsored by State or Territory Government Agency
  • Have no intention of working full-time in Australia (you are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week)
  • NOT be a cost to Australia’s social and welfare services
  • Own minimum assets lawfully acquired by applicant or partner. Assets should NEVER be sold unless advised to do so by DIMA.
  • Have minimum net income benefits
  • Be able to make a minimum designated investment

Due to changing legislation, we advise that you confirm the actual value of minimum assets, designated investment and net income benefits with DIMA.

If your application is successful, you will be allowed to come to Australia, initially, for 4 years. After this initial 4 year period, you can apply for a further 4 years and so on.

Regional Australia/low population growth residential areas:

People applying for the Investor Retirement Visa may wish to consider living in a low population growth metropolitan area or in regional Australia as these require a lower level of designated investment, annual income and settlement funds from applicants.

This means that Investor Retirement Visa holders can live anywhere in Australia except Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, the NSW Central Coast, Wollongong, Newcastle, the Gold Coast, the ACT or Melbourne.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require information or have any queries about applying for an investment retirement visa.
